Abstract

Purpose: This study was to examine the effects of a substance abuse prevention program on middle school students.

Methods: This research design was a quasi-experimental pretest and posttest control and experimental group methodological comparison study. The total subjects were 257 middle school students in G city. The experimental group received a program for eight sessions, but the control group did not receive treatment. Data was collected by self-reported structured questionnaires from Sep. 1st to Oct. 30th 2007, and analyzed with the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, x2 test, t-test, and ANCOVA using the SPSS/WIN 15.0 program.

Results: After the treatment, between the experimental and control groups, there was a significant difference in the level of smoking and drinking related knowledge, attitude, and smoking and drinking refuse efficacy.

Conclusion: Based on the above findings, it is recommended that this program should be used as a school based practice as an effective nursing intervention for adolescents.
